About this project

The Body as a Metaphorical Representation of the Romanian Political and Ethnic Community (15th – 20th centuries)

This project is financed by UEFISCDI, 215 / 5.10.2011, PN-II-ID-PCE-2011-3-0730

The present research aims to study successive (both explicit and implicit, textual, iconographic and ideological) expressions of the comparison between human body and the organisation of Romanian society. The approach deals with contextualized interpretation of concrete-historical meaning of these occurrences and the significance of their representations for the evolution of political and social organisation from Middle Ages to the late 20th century. The research will to take into account both historical and cultural realities of Byzantine and post-Byzantine world and those specific to Central and Eastern Europe. This way, the project aims to offer a new perspective on the Romanian history, by diachronic revealing of how political and ethnic community was fancied. In terms of approach, the innovative nature of this study, which belongs to the highly topical history of political and ethnic representations, derives both from the focus of analysis on anthropology and the methodology of research, which connects case studies with cultural and artistic explorations.

The specific objectives are systematized regarding the way they are related, thus pointing out different stages of the present study:

  • The first specific objective is to emphasize the hypostasis of metaphorical representation of the Romanian political community from Middle Ages to the 20th body. From this perspective, the novelty of the project is that a complete inventory is to be made for the first time, regarding the occurrence of bodily metaphor, meant to represent the core of a database which will be available for all the researchers in the project.
  • The second specific objective is to organize information on symbolic significance of body so as to allow the team to interpret all these situations in their historical context; thus will be reconstituted the specific manner in which bodily metaphor was used to illustrate social and political organization. The achievement of this objective will also turn into novelty as it represents a breakthrough in terms of understanding how the Romanian social and political society organisation has been symbolically depicted in various moments of its existence.
  • Fulfilling the first specific goals will help emphasize the dynamics of different forms of bodily metaphor over the time and particularly the meanings that can be associated with this historical development. Capturing the factors that have determined various changes is a novelty for the Romanian historiography as it explains mental mechanisms that have caused political and social paradigm changes.
